Online Co-op is a unique opportunity for Lambton Kent region students who have left school without completing diploma requirements. To be eligible for the program, the student must be under the age of 21. To be eligible for one co-op credit the student must complete 110 hours of work, therefore, for this 3 credit course students must average 22 hours of work each week for a total of 330 hours. Students are enrolled in a 3 credit package for the September to January semester or the February to June semester; they are registered at the last secondary school they attended.
In addition to the hours spent at a workplace, the student is also completing course work online, usually on his/her own home computer. The student’s computer must have Internet access. An orientation session, held at the beginning of the semester, introduces the students to the program’s expectations and teacher. The course work includes log sheets, assignments and online discussions. On the weekly log sheets, students provide details of the hours spent at work and a description of the tasks and activities performed. There are also online assignments, discussions and tests (about topics such as workplace health and safety, Employment Standards Act, WHMIS, stress ergonomics, job search skills and career planning). The online course work takes approximately 3-5 hours a week and it can be completed at any time of day or night that is convenient for the student.
A Co-op teacher visits the student at his or her workplace periodically during the semester. The employer is asked to provide new work experiences for the student where possible and complete an evaluation of the student’s work. The co-op credits are “tied” to high school credits that the student has already completed. Students working in trade related areas may be eligible to register as apprentices. They can receive OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) high school credits and accumulate hours required for their apprenticeship.
This program is IDEAL for individuals who have completed their compulsory courses and need only a few credits to complete their diploma.
We are currently developing a list of students for next semester. Interested individuals need to complete the registration and application forms. Application forms are available from the Online Co-operative Education teacher. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Cal McCabe at mccabeca@lkdsb.net or 519-676-5485 (Ext. 232)
