GENERAL INFORMATION

 

Many awards are mentioned in this booklet ranging from a school and local-level to those which are Canada-wide.  Several involve high academic achievement but the criteria varies with each.

 

Some awards are automatic although some require an application form.  A few organizations have their own specific applications that you must obtain.  Many of the awards may be applied for on the common Guidance Application form available in the Guidance Office.

 

Many scholarships require reference letters, which take quite some time for your referee to prepare.

LOCAL / SCHOOL AWARDS

 

BDHS HONOUR AWARD / STUDENT LETTER

 50 points are needed to receive an Honour Award - 25 points for a student letter.  Application in Guidance.

 

BDHS STAFF AWARDS

Each year teachers make a voluntary contribution to the Awards Fund.  The Staff Awards Committee decides who will receive these awards.  The granting of these awards is based on a combination of school citizenship, need and scholastic ability.  Guidance application.

 

BDHS STUDENT ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARDS

This award is given to a male and a female member of the Student Athletic Association.  The recipients must have made an outstanding contribution to the athletic program of our high school and to the BDHS Athletic Association.   To be eligible each winner must be furthering his/her education at a post-secondary institution.  The decision concerning the granting of these awards will be made by the members of the Student Athletic Association.  No application needed.

 

BDHS STUDENT COUNCIL AWARDS

It is traditional for the Student Council to present each year an award to BDHS students.  The criteria for these awards are:  the recipient must have been involved in extra-curricular activities; the recipient must have made a valid contribution to the spirit and life of the school; the recipient must be furthering his/her education at a post-secondary institution; the recipient may or may not be a member of student council.

 

There are no application forms for this award. 

 

BLENHEIM AND DISTRICT MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION

This bursary ( up to $500) is given to a graduating student of any religious affiliation who is pursuing education leading to careers where our Christian faith and values of care and compassion might be manifested.  To apply, complete an essay (200 words) stating your goals towards one of the helping professions and/or full time ministry.  A letter of recommendation/support from your local Church needs to accompany the essay.  Applications may be forwarded through your minister.

 

BLENHEIM AND DISTRICT CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AWARD

It is recommended that the recipient of this award has achieved high marks in several Business courses.  As well, the recipient must be pursuing a post secondary Business program.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION BURSARY

This annual bursary will be presented to an above-average academic graduating student who has successfully participated in the Co-op Education Program, or who has been involved in community affairs, commercial or social, with above average performance.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM COMMUNITY GOLF CLUB AWARD

This award is to show appreciation to a student(s) employed by the Blenheim Golf Club.    The students must be attending a post-secondary institution.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM COMMUNITY FUNERAL HOME STUDENT AWARD

This award is given to a deserving student who intends to pursue a career in the funeral home environment or in a helping profession in social services.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM COMMUNITY VILLAGE STUDENT AWARD

This award is given to a deserving caring and empathetic student who intends to enter a post-secondary health-related or personal support program.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM DISTRICT FREEDOM LIBRARY & MUSEUM BURSARY

This award goes to a graduating student who is attending a post secondary program studying history or political science.  Guidance application.

 

BLENHEIM HARWICH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The intent of this award is to help a deserving student to pursue a course of study in a plant science or other horticultural related course.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM KINSMEN CLUB AWARD

The Kinsmen Club would like to assist a student who is proceeding to post-secondary education.  The first priority for this award is that the recipient is involved in community activities and/or school activities in a service capacity i.e. a contributing member of society.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM MINOR HOCKEY BURSARY

This award is for a student who meets the following criteria: a BDHS graduate, must have played hockey in the BDMHA system within the last 3 years, must be continuing education in an apprenticeship program, college or university.  Application in Guidance.

 

BLENHEIM MOOSE LODGE STUDENT AWARD

Two awards are given to deserving students to help that student finance his/her education beyond the high school level.  Guidance application

 

BLENHEIM NEWS TRIBUNE STUDENT AWARD

This award is given to a deserving student who plans to pursue a post-secondary program in journalism, media, graphics or communication studies.  Guidance application

 

CHARTWELL AWARD

The award will be presented to a graduating student who is entering a post secondary program.  Preference may be given to a student studying Culinary Arts or Food and Beverage Management.  Guidance application

 

CHATHAM MASONIC LODGE AWARD, BRUCE B. FOSTER CHARITABLE FOUNDATION  

The bursaries are open to any financially challenged student.  High academic achievement is not the determining factor.  Bursaries are offered to graduates from Chatham-Kent County schools entering college or university. Masonic application form in Guidance.  ($1000 each).  Deadline April 30.

 

CHATHAM MASONIC LODGE AWARD, FRANK GROSS ACADEMIC & HUMANITARIAN AWARD

This award is open to any student who is pursuing post secondary education and who has made significant contributions in volunteering to the well being of their community.  Application in Guidance.  Due date May 20.

 

CHRYSLER SHILLINGTON ACCOUNTING AWARD

A $50 award for the student receiving the highest mark in Grade 12 accounting. 

 

DEANNA TIMMERMANS MEMORIAL BURSARY

An award in memory of an esteemed teacher will be presented annually to a deserving student graduating from BDHS . The recipient will have attended BDHS for at least his/her graduating year and will be attending post secondary school in the area of languages (French, English, etc.) or Communications.  Guidance application.

 

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

This award will be given to a student in the graduating class who has demonstrated academic, athletic and social excellence.  The recipient must be pursuing a post secondary education.  Guidance application.

 

GARFIELD WESTON MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR COLLEGES  

This unique scholarship is designed to identify, recognize and reward well-rounded students who intend to study full time in a 2 or 3-year program in college.  Candidates should have strong records of leadership and community service.  Application from the web site www.gwmsc.ca or check with Guidance.  February deadline.

 

GOVERNOR GENERALS MEDAL

This award will be presented to the student with the highest academic average in the graduating class.  The average includes all grade 11 and grade 12 courses.


 

GROWING TOGETHER FAMILY RESOURCE AWARD

This award will be awarded to a student enrolled in an Early Childhood Education program.  Guidance application.

 

JOAN BOYES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP & GABLE REES ROTARY POOL SCHOLARSHIP

This award is presented to a student graduating from a public secondary school within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent.  The student must have worked/volunteered at the Blenheim Community Leisure Centre for a significant period of time, be in need of financial assistance to pursue educational goals, and must have demonstrated a commitment to the life and vitality of the Blenheim Community Leisure Centre.  Applications are available in Guidance and at the Leisure Centre Office.  Interview process.  Due Date March 31.

 

JOHN GILCHRIST MEMORIAL ROTARY CITIZENSHIP AWARDS

Two awards are presented annually for good citizenship.  One goes to the most outstanding female and one to the most outstanding male school citizen.  Guidance application

 

LIBRO FINANCIAL GROUP AWARD

This award is to be presented annually to a deserving BDHS graduate, who has continued to some form of post secondary education.  Candidates must have demonstrated a strong involvement in their community – by extensive volunteering, by demonstrating a leadership role in their volunteer efforts, and/or by going above and beyond other students’ involvement in their community.  The student must also have a minimum of 80% overall average.   Application in Guidance.

 

MALLORY INDUSTRIES INC. AWARD

This award goes to a graduating student within the Technical Department who is going on to post secondary education, to apprenticeship, or to a skilled trade.  The student must have 3 Technical credits (2 at the senior level) within the same area of study.  Application in Guidance.

 

MARIAN HOLIK LISTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This award consists of two $100 scholarships  – one to a male and one to a female who meet or exceed the criteria below:

MARJORIE REES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This award is presented to two graduating students of Blenheim District High School.  The Scholarship will be issued in two instalments of $2500.00 each per year, for two years.  Criteria for this scholarship:  proof of full-time attendance at a post-secondary educational institute (college or university) in Canada in the fall of the year following graduation from BDHS, and must maintain a full course load in each of the terms of the scholarship in order to qualify; preference, in order of priority, will be given to students who: graduated with a minimum overall average of 70%; have demonstrated a commitment to the life and spirit of BDHS; have exhibited the qualities of leadership and enthusiasm for the educational experience; are in need of financial assistance to pursue educational goals.  Application in Guidance.  Interview process. Due date March 31.

 

MCINTYRE IDA PHARMACY AWARD

This award is to be given to a student who will be attending university to pursue studies in pharmacy or life sciences.  Guidance application.

 

McLAUCHLIN CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC AWARD

The recipient of this award will be entering Kinesiology or a health related program intending to focus on athletic injuries.  Guidance application.

 

MELISA ELLACOTT MEMORIAL BURSARY (2006)

The recipient of this annual award shall be a deserving student from BDHS pursuing a post secondary education.  This student will have demonstrated an involvement in the school community.  Guidance application

 

ONTARIO POWER GENERATION AWARDS

These awards go to 2 graduating students who are furthering their education in college or university in any of the following fields:  Engineering, Science, Environment, Technology, Mathematics, Physics or Business.  The students must demonstrate leadership skills, strong oral and written communication skills good academic standing (minimum B average), involvement in extra-curricular activities and community volunteerism.   Applications are due in early June.

 

OSSTF FEDERATION FAMILY BURSARY PROGRAM

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation established this bursary program to assist financially the children of OSSTF members entering college or university programs.  Ten $1500.00 bursaries are to be offered each year.  Apply online at : www.OSSTF.pm.ca/services .

 

RANDOLPH CHURCHILL CHAPTER I.O.D.E. BURSARY

This bursary is presented to one graduating student of BDHS.  This bursary will be issued in one instalment of $2,000.  Preference shall be given to students who:

RANDOLPH CHURCHILL CHAPTER I.O.D.E.  – MARGARET STORY MEMORIAL AWARD-  

This award is given to a graduate of BDHS who is entering a recognized Nursing Program.  Guidance application.

 

RANDOLPH CHURCHILL CHAPTER I.O.D.E. - CATHERINE CHRISTMAS-PRINGLE AWARD

The candidate must be enrolled in a post secondary school intending to pursue a career in teaching.  Guidance application.

 

RANDOLPH CHURCHILL CHAPTER I.O.D.E. - STUDENT AWARD

This award is given to a graduate of BDHS who is entering a post secondary education.  Guidance application

 

RESISTANCE WELDING PRODUCTS LTD. STUDENT AWARD

Two awards will be given to deserving students who have plans to pursue a post-secondary technical program or a skilled trade apprenticeship. Guidance application.

 

RONDEAU ROD AND GUN CLUB

This annual award is to be presented to a male or female student who is continuing on to post secondary education in the area of environmental studies, sciences, engineering or technology.  Guidance application

 

RON’S NO FRILLS AWARD

The recipient of this award shall be a deserving student from BDHS who is pursuing a post secondary education.  Candidates will have demonstrated consistent effort and determination in a variety of aspects of school life.  Guidance application

 

SOBEY’S AWARD

The recipient of this award shall be a deserving student from BDHS who is pursuing a post secondary education.  Candidates will have demonstrated consistent effort and determination in a variety of aspects of school life.  Guidance application.

 

TALISMAN ENERGY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student with a high mark in a science program and continuing their education in an environmental field.  Guidance application.

 

THE WESLEY G. THOMPSON FOUNDATION AWARD

This award, valued at $1000, goes to a graduate who enrolls in a post-secondary institution in the year of graduation.  Additional criteria: the recipient will be in need of financial assistance, his/her family normally resides within the territorial areas to attend BDHS, and the recipient must be pursuing an Agricultural Science major area of study.   Guidance application

 

 

 

LAMBTON KENT DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

 

 

THE FRANK FINDLAY TRUST FUND (as of 2003)

Grants are available from the Frank Findlay Trust Fund to students who have attended Public secondary schools within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, and proceed to post secondary education.  A limited number of $1,000. bursaries for each term.  A recent transcript of marks must accompany all applications.

 

The application for the Frank Findlay Trust Fund is available in the Guidance Office in the Secondary Schools and at both Administrative Offices.

 

Elsie E. Holmes Award

For a full time student; (in priority) in need of financial assistance; majoring in music, taking music as part of curriculum.  Deadline June 1.  Application in Guidance.

 

Dr. Shirley M. Holmes Award

For a full time student (in priority) in need of financial assistance, majoring in sciences, taking sciences as part of curriculum.  Deadline June 1.  Application in Guidance.

 

Jane Evelyn Stover Award

For full-time students to further their educational pursuits at college or university and/or to assist full time students who are experiencing financial hardship which may prevent them from remaining in secondary school - recipients have demonstrated achievement (not necessarily academic), and be a positive school citizen.

 

Jessie Houston Award

Qualifying students must:

For the purpose of being selected a recipient,  students will be included in one of the following two groups:

Group A – scholarships will be based on an average of the top 6 Grade 12 university and/or university/college destination courses.  Co-operative courses will not be used to calculate this average. Students who meet the following criteria will be considered in Group A.   Completing a minimum of 6 Grade 12 university and/or university/college destination courses (these courses do not need to be taken in the same year) and at least 2 of these 6 courses are categorized as Grade 12 university destination courses.

Group B – Students who do not meet the criteria outlined for Group A will be considered for Group B as follows:  an average will be calculated from the top 6 senior (Grade 11 or 12) courses (these courses do not need to be taken in the same year) and a maximum of 1 two-credit Co-operative education course may be calculated into the average.

 

Awards are granted in each of the groups as follows:

i)          highest average                    $900.00

ii)         second highest average       $700.00

iii)        third highest average            $500.00

 

LORETTA AND HARVEY BURFIELD AWARD

The award recipient will be a well-rounded graduating student who has made a conscientious effort to strive for excellence throughout his or her secondary school career.  Guidance application

 

 

UNIVERSITY AWARDS

A variety of entrance scholarships are offered to first year students.  Your application for admission is often all that's needed for scholarship consideration.  To be competitive with all other qualified applicants, university applications must meet initial deadlines plus some awards require separate applications, essays, and/or portfolios by a specific deadline.

 

Read the scholarship sections of your INFO booklet and the current university calendars for the most specific and accurate information.  Scholarship information may be posted on the Guidance bulletin board.

 

Most universities have a National Admission Scholarship Programme and/or President's Scholarships.

 

Further information is available from Student Awards offices at each university.

 

 

COLLEGE AWARDS

 

Entrance awards may be offered to first year students.  Check the Guidance bulletin board and refer to college calendars for further information.

 

 

ONTARIO / CANADA WIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

 

AIMING FOR THE TOP TUITION SCHOLARSHIP

The purpose of this award is to aid students who earn top marks but require financial assistance to attend post secondary school.  Application made through OSAP.

 

CMA CANADA SCHOLARSHIPS

CMA awards $1000 scholarships to 10 outstanding graduating students each year, plus a 1 year complimentary Associate Membership with CMA Ontario.  Graduating students entering a business program at an Ontario university, who demonstrate leadership qualities in both school and community and maintain an 80% average, are strongly encouraged to apply.  Deadline:  April 1.  More information and application at Guidance or on-line at www.cma-ontario.org.

 

CANADA TRUST SCHOLARSHIPS

These scholarships for full tuition up to 4 years of undergraduate studies at university or college are intended to honour exceptional young people who already have tried to "make their mark" by demonstrating outstanding and consistent caring for the improvement of the community.  Applications at any Canada Trust branch or the Guidance Office.  Deadline October 31.  www.tdcanadatrust.com/scholarships

 

 


CANADIAN GOLF FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Applications are available to graduating students with an A average who can provide proof of success in competitive golf at the National, Provincial, or Regional level as well as proof of participation in extra curricular or community activities.

 

CANADIAN HOSPITALITY FOUNDATION

This award is for students who are eligible to enter some form of Hotel, Food & Beverage and

Culinary programs.  90 scholarships across Canada ranging in value from $500 - $3000.   Check with Guidance for further information.

 

CANADA HOSTELRY INSTITUTE AWARDS  

5 $1,000 college entrance awards for graduating high school students who want to undertake diploma programs in Culinary, Food & Beverage or Hotel Management courses.  Application process includes a letter of recommendation from your school and a letter of recommendation from a past or current employer.  Deadline mid May.

 

KENT FEDERATION OF AGRICULTURE

This $1000 scholarship is for a student entering the 1st year at a post secondary Ag School.  The only stipulation for applying is that the student be from the family of a Kent Federation of Agriculture member.  Check at Guidance for more information.

 

LORAN AWARD

Deadline October 23 for sponsored applicants and October 31 for direct pool applicants.  A charitable trust dedicated to providing financial assistance to university undergrads who offer values beyond what can be seen on an academic transcript - values of character, leadership, and community service.  Criteria:  strong applicants demonstrate the following characteristics:  strong academic performance and moral character, commitment to serving others, great potential as leaders, independent thinking, and a willingness to take meaningful risks.  Application available at Guidance.

 

MONSANTO AGRI-BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIPS

$1000.  50 Agri-business or Agriculture scholarships are being offered by Monsanto to high school students across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, who come from farming families and have demonstrated academic standards and leadership within their agricultural community.  Check at Guidance for application information.  Deadline August 16.

 

OASBO ATHLETIC AWARD (Ontario Association of School Business Officials)

Two $500 awards to a male and female students who is currently enrolled full-time in an Ontario high school; with a minimum of 80%; has leadership qualities and is involved in the community.  Application through OASBO at (416)923-3107) or e-mail:  office@oasbo.org  Deadline April 30.

 

OFSAA

OFSAA has partnered with various groups to offer four scholarship opportunities for student-athletes.  To learn more about these scholarships and to access application forms please visit our website at www.ofsaa.on.ca. Maple Leafs Alumni Scholarship, Canada Basketball Scholarship, Brian Maxwell Memorial Scholarship and OFSAA Alumni Scholarships.

 

ONTARIO HOCKEY FEDERATION BURSARY

Each student that is a member of OHF, via his or her Member Partner, and who is attending a recognized Canadian post secondary institution is eligible for a bursary of up to $1000 providing that they meet the qualifying criteria.  Application forms for the OHF Bursary Program are available on-line at  www.ohf.on.ca 

 

ONTARIO PARKS ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION

The OPAF is offering Bursary and Scholarships to deserving students pursuing post secondary education in any phase of public parks works, related horticulture, conservation or research on horticulture projects.  Check with Guidance for more information or email at agoldie@city.guelph.on.ca.

 

PADGETT BUSINESS SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Available to children of small, independent business owners.  $500.  Deadline March 1.  Application available in Guidance.

 

RBC AMATEUR HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP

This program is to promote post-secondary education by helping the students currently playing amateur hockey in one of the 5 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) regions in Ontario.  Up to 10 entrance scholarships – 2 per allocated region – 1 to a female and 1 to a male.  Applicable to full-time studies to the first year of a first undergraduate degree or diploma.  Eligible applicants must a registered player in OHL; a Grade 12 graduating student; planning full-time attendance at an accredited Canadian university or college starting no later than September; currently playing amateur hockey in one of the 5 OHL regions in Ontario; minimum average of 70%; no game misconduct penalties during the current season.  Application forms and further information can be directed to www.aucc.ca.

 

PAUL MORELAND / COPP CLARK PITMAN AWARD

For outstanding achievement in Business Studies.  $1000 plus plaque.  Deadline April 22.  Students must write a 500 word essay entitled "The Most Important Issue Facing Business Today".  Request nomination form before March 2.  Notification by June 10.

 

SPIRIT OF HOSPITALITY AWARD

You must be in your final year of high school and must enrol this September in a Canadian Hospitality Training program in one o the following areas of study:  culinary or pastry, food & beverage or hotel.  Letters of recommendation from a high school personnel and a past or current employer are required.  Applications postmarked no later than May 31st.

 

TERRY FOX HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Graduating secondary school students and those currently studying towards a 1st degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution may apply.  Student must volunteer and have the ability to overcome obstacles.  Participation in sport/fitness and academic standing also factor into the selection process.  Download application for the website www.terryfox.org/English/App_Info.html

 

YOUTH BOWLING COUNCIL (ONTARIO DIVISION) AND BOWLING PROPRIETORS' ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO

4500 Sheppard Avenue East, Unit 28, Scarborough, ON   M1S 3R6.  Financial assistance is provided to a minimum of 10 students each year based upon scholastic performance, bowling activity, community activity, personal recommendations and references, and an essay from the applicant.  Deadline for receipt of application is May 1.

BANK STUDENT LOANS

Several Canadian banks make money available to students for educational purposes.  Interested students should consult the bank of their choice.

 

OSAP 

These forms are completed on-line starting in May.  http://osap.gov.on.ca   Guidance runs a workshop in May to assist you in completing them.  Submit your completed form as early as possible.  The processing time is approximately 6 -8 weeks. 

 

Every Ontario university and college employs a Student Awards Officer to help answer your questions about OSAP, and to administer the program at the institution.  In addition to being knowledgeable in all aspects of OSAP, the Awards Officer is also familiar with the other forms of financial assistance, such as scholarships and bursaries, which are available.
